Stavros Kyriopoulos, President of the Federation of Greek Communities in Brazil, discussed the efforts he made to establish an annual celebration of “Greek Immigrant Day” in the Latin American country. He spoke on Voice of Greece, during the show “Our Global Voice” with Petros Diplas and Dimitris Kontogiannis.
Inspired by the official celebration for the Italian Immigrant, Mr. Kyriopoulos, with the help of Brazilian officials of Lebanese descent and others, succeeded in passing a law in the Brazilian Parliament. This law, signed by the country’s President, Mr. Lula, on July 11, officially designates September 21 as “Greek Immigrant Day” in Brazil. A related event to celebrate the occasion, featuring speeches by Members of Parliament, the Greek Ambassador, and Mr. Kyriopoulos, will take place in the Brazilian Parliament in the capital city of Brasília on September 25.
