Antonis Klapsis, Associate Professor of Modern History and International Politics at the University of the Peloponnese, spoke on Voice of Greece and the program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis, reflecting on the events surrounding the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in July 1974.
Professor Klapsis highlighted the fateful withdrawal of the Greek division from Cyprus in 1967, following clashes between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in Kokkino. He also examined the bloody coup against Archbishop Makarios on 15 July 1974, orchestrated by the military junta in Athens.
He further underscored the broader political context of the time in Greece, Turkey, and the United States.
