Captain Giannis Fostieris on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” | 20 Nov. 2024

From the Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery in Amorgos, where he attended the Divine Liturgy for the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, the seasoned Captain Giannis Fostieris spoke on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” and Voice of Greece.

After 35 years at the helm of the legendary Express Skopelitis, Captain Giannis has retired, now enjoying time with his family and friends. He reflects on his long maritime career, sharing his thoughts and emotions about his service to the sea, his ships, and the Small Cyclades.

“I graduated from the Syros Merchant Marine Academy in 1980 and embarked on my first journey from Genoa, Italy, aboard the M/V Tolmiros. From 1989 until my retirement, I sailed the Small Cyclades with the Skopelitis, forming deep bonds with the locals, the islands, their challenges, and their everyday life. I worked this route for 35 years with only four months off. I am grateful to everyone and will miss them dearly. I also thank my wife, Maria, for her devotion and support,” he said. He added, “The sea, like society, must not be feared but respected and served with love and faith. That’s the key to a successful journey.”

The Municipality of Amorgos and the Amorgos Sports, Nautical, and Cultural Association are honoring Captain Giannis Fostieris in a special ceremony for his invaluable contribution to the islands and maritime heritage.

Thank you, Captain Giannis!
