Captain Ourania Syka, originally from Skopelos, shares her journey on Voice of Greece and the show “Fair Winds and Following Seas”.
“I graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy of Aspropyrgos and began my career in coastal shipping to see if the profession was right for me—if I could handle it,” she recalls. “That’s when I discovered how much I loved the sea and the world of shipping, and realized I wanted to go further.”
This realization led her to make the leap from coastal ferries to deep-sea shipping. Today, she speaks with pride and enthusiasm about her decision to pursue a maritime career. She expresses heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported her—family, crewmates, colleagues, and mentors.
To those just starting out, she offers this advice: “Don’t focus on the financial rewards. First, you must love the sea and the ships. Let your involvement in shipping become a way of life—everything else will follow.”
The first vessel she captained was the M/V MARAN POSIDON.
