Captain Ourania Syka on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” | 21 May 2025

Captain Ourania Syka, originally from Skopelos, shares her journey on Voice of Greece and the show “Fair Winds and Following Seas”.

I graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy of Aspropyrgos and began my career in coastal shipping to see if the profession was right for me—if I could handle it,” she recalls. “That’s when I discovered how much I loved the sea and the world of shipping, and realized I wanted to go further.”

This realization led her to make the leap from coastal ferries to deep-sea shipping. Today, she speaks with pride and enthusiasm about her decision to pursue a maritime career. She expresses heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported her—family, crewmates, colleagues, and mentors.

To those just starting out, she offers this advice: “Don’t focus on the financial rewards. First, you must love the sea and the ships. Let your involvement in shipping become a way of life—everything else will follow.

The first vessel she captained was the M/V MARAN POSIDON.
