Steve (Stathis) Georganas, federal Member of Parliament in Australia, spoke on Voice of Greece and the program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis about the history of Australia’s capital and the ongoing effort to establish a sister-city relationship between Athens and Adelaide.
Mr. Georganas, who was recently re-elected to the Board of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (WHIA), emphasized the organization’s vital role in promoting Greek interests in countries where elected officials of Greek descent hold office.
He added that the twinning of the Greek capital with Adelaide could be formalized in July 2026, during the COP31 climate conference, which the Australian city will host. He also spoke about the Greek community in Adelaide—often referred to as the “Athens of South Australia”—where 70,000 individuals holding Greek passports migrated between 1953 and the early 1970s. Greeks from Kastellorizo, Ithaca, and other regions had settled in Adelaide even earlier, he concluded.
