Stavros Kyriopoulos, president of the Federation of Greek Communities of Brazil, spoke on the occasion of Greek Immigrant Day, an official holiday in Brazil, which was celebrated by the Greek Community of São Paulo in an event attended by representatives of the Greek Consular Authorities, the Metropolitan of Buenos Aires and South America, and a large audience, on September 21st. He spoke on the program “Our Global Voice”, hosted by Dimitris Kontogiannis.
Mr. Kyriopoulos highlighted the invaluable contribution of an Orthodox Brazilian MP of Lebanese descent, who had studied at a Greek school in Argentina, in establishing September 21st as Greek Immigrant Day in Brazil, starting from 2024. He stated that the initiative was inspired by the existing Italian Immigrant Day, already celebrated in the samba nation.
The president of the Federation also spoke warmly about the organized visit programs to Greece, involving members of the Greek diaspora, children, young people, and elderly individuals, which had been suspended during the economic crisis but resumed last year under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
