Radio Officer Evangelia Andrikopoulou on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” (Part I) | 17 Dec. 2025

Radio officer Evangelia Andrikopoulou from Kardamyla, Chios, speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” and on Voice of Greece.

The sea and seamanship have been the defining elements of her life and her family’s life. She remembers her father leaving for voyages with his seafarer’s bag and returning after long periods away, while her mother would often ask whether the postman had passed by to deliver her father’s letter. Ships and life at sea, she says, carry both the sweetness and the saltiness of the sea itself.

She graduated from the Thalis School of Radio Officers and embarked as a cadet in 1979. The first vessel she sailed on was the M/V Nikolaos Angelakis, which they took over in Vietnam. It was the first ship to arrive there for commercial purposes after the long war, an experience she will never forget, along with the nine children who were discovered as stowaways in the cargo holds after departure.
