Captain Apostolos Anastasiadis, who has 20 years of sea service and spent 17 years teaching at the Merchant Marine Academy of Aspropyrgos and the Seafarers Further Training Center, speaks to the program “Fair Winds and Following Seas” and Voice of Greece.
“It is a difficult ladder to climb, the ladder of becoming a captain. It requires seriousness, responsibility, and consistency,” Captain Apostolis emphasizes characteristically, and continues: “Ignorance is worse than lack of education. Anyone who serves as an officer on the bridge, and in shipping in general, must be serious and responsible in their position and their duties. Human safety comes above everything else, but many other things are also at stake on a ship: from the vessel’s assets to the pollution of the sea, the cargo, schedules, the smooth coexistence and daily life of the crew, stowaways, and so on”.
