Danil Makris, President of the Greek Community of the Strait (Messina) in Sicily, spoke about the history of the Greeks of Messina—founded by settlers from Chalcis thousands of years ago—on the occasion of the recent presentation of his book The Greeks of Messina in Italian.
He also referred to the event being planned for World Greek Language Day, organised in collaboration with other associations and a Lyceum in Calabria, speaking on Voice of Greece radio and the program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis.
Mr. Makris stressed that the Community’s goal is to organise a Greek Music and Dance Festival at Capo Peloro, where children were still using Greek words up until 1960, running along the seashore and calling out to butterflies, “yalo, yalo ela” (“come to the shore, come to the shore”).
