Prof. Anastasios Tamis on the history of the Greek Diaspora | 20 Feb. 2026

Mr. Anastasios Tamis, Professor Emeritus of the History of the Greek Diaspora, spoke about the need for a “cultural offensive” by Greece on the occasion of World Greek Language Day, referring to the recent special event held at the Hellenic Parliament, which featured interventions by key supporters of the initiative, including Mr. Klairis from Paris and Mr. Korinthios from Italy. He shared his views on the radio program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis on Voice of Greece.

Mr. Tamis also referred to the Tositsio School in Tirana, where Greek is taught for several hours each week, as well as to what he described as an “epidemic” of closures of chairs of Classical Studies around the world.

Finally, he spoke about the Greek presence in Brazil since the 19th century and about the philhellene Emperor Dom Pedro II, who visited Greece in the 1870s and, upon returning to his country, abolished slavery a few years later.
