Stathis (Steve) Georganas, an Australian federal MP, spoke about the challenges facing Australians of Greek descent and the wider population, including the rising cost of living and housing, and the government’s measures to support households and businesses. Speaking on Voice of Greece’s “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis, he also discussed the healthcare system and efforts to preserve the Greek language among third-, fourth-, and fifth-generation Greek Australians.
Georganas highlighted shortages of workers with specific skills and an immigration policy focused on attracting people with qualifications needed by the Australian economy, such as electricians and mathematics and physics teachers. He noted that very few young people now arrive from Greece.
He also stated that Australia has recognized the genocide of the Pontic Greeks, supports Greece’s position on the Cyprus issue, and is preparing to welcome the Greek Presidential Guard to the federal parliament in Canberra for the 28 October commemorations.
