Dareia-Nefeli Vourdouba, Director of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature and National Coordinator of the Blue Flag programme, joined “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece to speak about Greece’s outstanding performance in this year’s international coastal awards.
“With 623 awarded beaches, Greece once again ranks second worldwide among 52 countries,” she noted. “The upward trend continues steadily, with more than 600 awards again this year. Greece now accounts for 15% of all Blue Flag beaches globally. Top-ranking regions include Halkidiki with 93 flags, Crete with 153, and Rhodes, leading among municipalities with 38.”
On the global scale, Spain holds first place with 642 Blue Flags, followed closely by Greece with just 19 fewer. The top five is rounded out by Turkey, Italy, and France.
“In total,” she added, “the International Committee awarded 4,302 beaches, 736 marinas, and 158 tourist boats around the world.”
