Dr. Spyros Cheirdaris, Director of ABS Global Ship Systems Center, on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” | 18 May 2026

Dr. Spyros Cheirdaris, Director of the Global Ship Systems Center of ABS (American Bureau of Shipping in Greece), speaks to “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.

I also chose to pursue a career in shipping, though from a different position than my father, who was a captain. Shipping offers tremendous opportunities for growth and advancement, provided one takes it seriously and invests in it. In return, the rewards are both moral and financial,” says Mr. Cheirdaris.

Referring to technological developments in the maritime sector, he notes that “over the past 10 to 15 years, we have been experiencing a technological revolution through the energy modernization of ships, new maritime systems, and enhanced vessel safety.
Alternative fuels are also evolving rapidly and are a major concern for the global shipping community, especially since the IMO has set 2050 as a key target year. New forms of nuclear energy, ammonia, and other energy sources are all being considered as part of the alternative fuel landscape, and we are closely monitoring and evaluating every option.
In line with the Paris Agreement, IMO regulations, and other international cooperation frameworks, shipping must continue taking measures to reduce atmospheric pollution, even though its emissions remain comparatively lower than those of other sectors that contribute more heavily to air pollution.
