Having served in the diplomatic corps abroad for many years, Nikolaos Vlachakis will discusses Bucharest, where he lives, and the Greek Embassy, where he serves. He talks about the city’s Greek community, its activities and the cultural events in which he is actively involved, as well as efforts to preserve Greek language and education.
Particular attention is given to translation and publishing, along with the literary presentations, concerts, film screenings and theater performances held in the city.
Vlachakis, who has published five poetry collections and received excellent reviews for both his poetry and his other published writing, discusses his philosophical influences, European culture, the changes it is undergoing and the threats it faces.
Despite his concerns, he remains optimistic. He reflects on how his diplomatic work informs his writing and thinking, broadening his intellectual horizons, and reminds listeners that many diplomats have also been accomplished poets.
Memory, history, the city and freedom also feature in the discussion.
