Our Town: Rhea Galanaki reflects on her life and writing | 31 Oct. 2026

The distinguished, award-winning author joins Themis Rodamitis in the studio for a wide-ranging conversation. She discusses her writing career, focusing on her much-discussed novels “Eleni, or Nobody” and “The Life of Ismail Ferik Pasha,” as well as her work on Giannoulis Chalepas.

Rhea Galanaki reflects on her childhood, her first steps in poetry, and the experiences that inspired her and later found their way into her short stories and novels.

The cities she has lived in and loved hold a special place in the conversation: Heraklion, her birthplace; Patras, where she spent many years with her partner, emeritus professor of medicine Ilias Kouvelas; and Athens, where she has lived for years.

An author who has made a significant contribution to literature and remains active in public life, she also discusses her travels and the cities that have stood out for her, the translation of her works into nineteen languages, and her relationship with music, cinema, the visual arts, and theater.

An encounter with one of the most important voices in contemporary Greek literature.
