“Our Town” presents the book “Distinguished Women Composers”(«Εκλεκτές γυναίκες συνθέτριες»), which profiles 320 women who shaped musical history from antiquity to the Belle Époque.
The episode’s guests are Efi Zanni, the book’s author and a pianist, and singer and composer Nena Venetsanou, who is also actively involved in women’s emancipation.
The discussion explores the lives and work of women who overcame social stereotypes and barriers to leave their mark on the history of music. These include figures from Renaissance Italy and beyond, as well as Vienna, Brazil, Venezuela, Australia, and Hawaii—women who, from the Enlightenment onward, stepped into public life and composed musical masterpieces.
The program also highlights the importance of recognizing women’s creative contributions and the struggle for equality and an end to violence against women.
Selected musical works and songs will be featured, including compositions by Nena Venetsanou.
