Unguarded Passage: “The Pylos shipwreck, one year later” | 14 June 2024

One year after the Pylos boat disaster, one of the deadliest migrant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean, “Unguraded Passage” hosts Lefteris Papagiannakis, director of the Hellenic Council for Refugees, in the studio of Voice of Greece.

The peak of migration flows in the previous decade, European policies on migration and social integration, especially after the electoral rise of far-right parties, the European Union’s migration agreements with third countries, migrant trafficking networks and the migration policy framework in Greece are some of the topics that Lefteris Papagiannakis will develop to ERT journalist Thomas Sideris.

Lefteris Papagiannakis was deputy mayor for immigrant and refugee issues (3/2016-8/2019), chairman of the Council for Immigrant Integration of the Municipality of Athens (2014 – 2019), chairman of the working group for immigration and integration of the Eurocities network (2017) -2019) and vice-president for refugee issues of ECCAR (European Coalition of Cities Against Racism 2017-2019). Since 2017, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Union for Human Rights. The Greek Council for Refugees is a Non-Governmental Organization, which has been active since 1989 in the field of asylum and human rights in Greece. In 2005, the Council was awarded by the President of the Republic, Karolos Papoulias, as an “Island of Quality Collective Action”, for his contribution to the production of voluntary and pioneering social work of quality in our country.
