Wander Words: Mount Helicon – Hosios Loukas – Distomo | 13 Jan. 2026

Setting out from the mountain of the Muses, Mount Helicon, we explored magnificent landscapes, mountain routes for lovers of nature and adventure, places of great historical significance, emblematic monuments, beautiful villages, and unique natural scenery.

We learned a great deal about a remarkable monastic complex listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Monastery of Hosios Loukas.
Our journey continued to Distomo, a village marked by a tragic fate, where in June 1944 the massacre of 229 civilians was carried out by German forces, in retaliation for the actions of Greek Resistance fighters in the area. Today, Distomo is a small town where one can immerse oneself in these dark chapters of our history and draw lessons from them — lessons that help shape a more conscious and responsible future.

Finally, we learned more about the mountain activities available today on the slopes, trails, and forests of Helicon.

Our companions and guides on this radio journey were Maria Korogiannou, President of the Heliconians’ Association of Livadeia; Archimandrite Serafeim Pavlidis, Abbot of the Monastery of Hosios Loukas; Amalia Papaioannou, Curator of the Distomo Museum of Victims of Nazism; and Prodromos Pytiropoulos, Head of Helicon Sports Activities.
