On the program, Panagiota Nakou, the Director of the Greek Library of London, joined from London.
The primary goal of this non-profit organization, established in London in 2017, is to lend Greek books across the UK to promote the Greek language and connect readers with the works of authors from Greece and Cyprus. With a diverse collection of over 6,000 books and 1,000 children’s titles, the library offers potential readers selections ranging from poetry, prose, and short fiction to academic studies, historical and philosophical essays, both in Greek and in translation. It serves as a cultural hub and meeting point for the Greek diaspora. Monthly gatherings in central London and various events strengthen the bonds within the Greek community.
Ms. Nakou discussed the library’s activities, which include commemorative tributes, library gatherings, events with guests from Greece, authors, poets, historians, and artists, as well as children’s programs. She highlighted a special tribute titled Cyprus 1974-2024: A 50-Year Journey, held tonight, Tuesday, November 12, at the Cyprus House in London.
Currently, the Greek Library of London seeks a permanent home in the city. Moving forward in 2025, it plans to continue its mission with the support of many volunteers and to collaborate with universities and esteemed British professors and scholars, aiming to host meetings in English on Greek themes.
The show featured songs with lyrics by Michalis Ganas, who passed away earlier this morning.
