“Faraway Words” with Greek-American filmmaker Julia Speropoulos | 20 May 2025

Greek-American filmmaker Julia Speropoulos was the featured guest on the show, speaking about her latest animated short film titled “Agapi” (Love).

The film centers on the genocide of the Pontic Greeks, with a particular focus on the devastating “white death marches.” As Speropoulos explained, it is a hand-drawn, digitally animated short, entirely illustrated by her—a deeply personal project that took more than three years to complete.

“Agapi” had its world premiere in New York at the “It’s Greek to Me” Festival, hosted by the Hellenic Film Society USA, at the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) on Sunday, May 18, followed by a Q&A session.

This is the second time Speropoulos has explored the subject of the Pontic Greek genocide through film. Although she is not of Pontic origin herself, she stressed the importance of sharing this history and the need for its recognition by as many nations as possible.
