Dr. Christos Tsirogiannis, Visiting Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, Department of Archaeology – Special Researcher on illicit antiquities at the Swiss Ministry of Culture – and Head of the Research Team on Illegal Antiquities at the UNESCO Chair at the Ionian University, was hosted today on the show “Take Your Time” with Prokopis Agelopoulos, on the occasion of the discussion about the return of the Parthenon Sculptures.
The renowned archaeologist has been doing significant work for years. He investigates and uncovers archaeological crimes worldwide, contributing to the identification and repatriation of antiquities that are illegally trafficked.
Mr. Tsirogiannis spoke about the crucial work he does in tracing stolen ancient artifacts and emphasized the difficulty of halting illegal excavations in Greece, even within fenced archaeological sites, due to the activities of ruthless antiquities smuggling networks. Regarding the Parthenon Sculptures, he was adamant that secret negotiations for their return should not take place, stressing the importance of ensuring that the ownership of the sculptures is officially recognized by the Greek State.
Dr. Christos Tsirogiannis is a forensic archaeologist specializing in international antiquities trafficking networks and the antiquities trade. He has authored numerous studies and contributed to publications taught in many universities, museums, private collectors, and governments seeking to reform cultural heritage laws. Additionally, he has collaborated with various law enforcement, judicial, and cultural authorities, identifying hundreds of illicit antiquities and aiding in their repatriation to 13 countries to date.
