Antonis Chaldaios about the Greeks of Mozambique on “Our Global Voice” | 16 Jan. 2025

Antonis Chaldaios, a writer and researcher focused on the history of the Greek diaspora in Africa, spoke about the Greeks of Mozambique, who first arrived there in the 19th century, primarily originating from the Aegean islands, such as Limnos and Kasos, and the Anatolian coast. He discussed this on Voice of Greece radio in the program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis.

Mr. Chaldaios, the author of 11 books on the Greek community in Africa, expressed optimism that the Greek presence in Mozambique will continue, albeit in small numbers, down from 4,500 before the country’s independence in the mid-1970s. Today, the 10-15 Greeks in the capital, Maputo, are involved in the plastic, food industries, and trade, and they have two churches, one in Maputo and one in Beira. It is worth noting that the cultivation and processing of tobacco were first introduced to Mozambique by the Greeks from Asia Minor, according to Mr. Chaldaios.
