Daniel Makris, President of the Greek Community of Messina in Sicily, joined the radio program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis on Voice of Greece. He spoke about his family’s history, as well as that of the city’s Greek-descended residents, tracing their roots back several centuries.
Mr. Makris also discussed the community’s efforts—alongside other organizations—to preserve and teach the Greek language in dozens of public Italian schools. These efforts are supported by a Greek state-appointed educator and university students from Greece who participate through the Erasmus European program.
He emphasized that many members of the Greek diaspora in Sicily travel to Greece during the summer, forging close ties with the land of their ancestors. He expressed optimism that their nieces, nephews, and grandchildren will continue along the same path.
