Ms. Evi Nomikou, Associate Professor of Geology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, hosted today the show “Take Your Time” with Prokopis Angelopoulos, on the occasion of her presence at Cities on Volcanoes, an Interdisciplinary International Conference dealing specifically with volcanic hazard, its social context and the way societies live and develop in a volcanic environment.
Ms Nomikou stated that this is an excellent Conference in which, apart from the scientists, Civil Protection officials also participated, who spoke to them about the management of the volcanic crisis. Referring to Guatemala’s volcanoes, she said they are impressive and especially Fuego, which is one of Central America’s most active volcanoes and has erupted more than 60 times in the last 500 years. It is known for its volcanic activity, occasionally accompanied by pyroclastic flows. Eruptions are concentrated in phases, between which, the volcano is sometimes interrupted for up to 170 years. Finally, regarding the volcano of Santorini, she argued that it is active but in a calm phase, as it does not show activity.
