VERMIO SOS
For the second time, we spoke with Dr. Nikos Giannakis, a biologist and environmentalist living in the village of Myliona – Prespa. The Vermio, Askio, Vitsi, and Kaimaktsalan mountain ranges are all targeted for the installation of massive wind farms. Vermio SOS is calling for signatures to support their cause.

“Newspaper Highlights”
- CRETE: On July 24, 2024, events were held in Rethymno. What is the New High Voltage Line for, and why? Protests against oil drilling in the seas. The New High Voltage Line will cross 8 Municipal Units and 45 Local Communities. The UNESCO Global Geopark of Psiloritis is a candidate for 100 pylons along a 35 km line. Natura and forest areas will be FRACTURED, and the metal pylons will be visible every 350 meters from archaeological and historical sites.
- EVIA: From July 19-21, 2024, the 82nd mountaineering meeting took place at Dirfi and Xirovouni in Evia at the “Michalis Nikolaou” shelter, focusing on the protection of mountains from wind farms and other industrial energy projects.
…and the GOOD NEWS:
- Stratos and Katastraki Lakes – “SAVE THE ACHERON LAKES”: 1,346 residents and stakeholders were legally represented against the Floating Photovoltaic Stations of TERNA and succeeded in prompting the Ministry of Environment to issue a NEGATIVE opinion on the Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).
- A ministerial decision prohibits the construction of dams and hydroelectric projects in the Aoos River area.
