General Gregory Vasili Dimitris Yalouris, Secretary General of the Greek Community of South Sudan, spoke about his family’s history, starting with his grandfather Dimitris Doukas Yalouris, originally from Mytilene, who arrived in the then-British-ruled Sudan via Egypt. He also discussed the South Sudanese of Greek descent and expressed a desire for closer relations with Greece during his interview on Voice of Greece radio station’s program “Our Global Voice” with Petros Diplas and Dimitris Kontogiannis.
General Vasili, who is the brother of the First Lady of South Sudan, Maria Vasili, emphasized that everyone is proud of their Greek heritage. He further noted that the community owns property, including buildings they rent out, but expressed their wish to build a Greek school on land owned by the community, so they wouldn’t have to send their children to other countries for education.
