On Saturday, March 22, 2025, “Our Town” will hosted Giorgos Markopoulos.
The award-winning poet, beloved by poetry enthusiasts, engaged in a revealing conversation with Themis Rodamitis, sharing his special relationships formed through his connections with fellow poets. He talked about the great Giorgos Seferis, and recounted personal spiritual moments with Odysseas Elytis, whom he calls a fiery poet. He refered to Tasos Livaditis as a “saint on earth,” with whom he had the fortune to drink coffee and converse.
Markopoulos mentioned Titos Patrikios, a great modernist and tender fighter, and Katerina Anghelaki-Rouke, whom he calls a “succulent being, in life and poetry.”
The conversation touched on Giannis Varveris, his “brother,” a remarkable intellectual who advised him to read dictionaries like novels.
He talked about Kostas Papageorgiou, who wrote great poems but was unlucky in life, and Giannis Kontos, a brilliant storyteller and a person of exceptional intellect. He also mentioned Kiki Dimoula, praising her intelligence and recalling that their properties in Messini were separated by artichoke fields.
Giorgos Markopoulos also talked about his neighborhood, the people next door, and the hardworking craftsmen. He recalled small, captivating stories and read some of his poems.
