Costa-Gavras on “Our Town” | 24 Feb. 2025

The acclaimed and multi-award-winning director Costa-Gavras, in an in-depth conversation with Themis Rodamitis, talks about The Last Breath, his newly released film. A remarkable film, in which the director sheds light on different characters and their varied approaches to death, as well as the moments of farewell with loved ones—presenting scenes of joy, almost celebration, alongside profound communication.

Costa-Gavras also speaks about his films, his collaborations with renowned actors (Yves Montand, Romy Schneider, etc.), and his favorite philosophers—Socrates, Heraclitus—as well as Cornelius Castoriadis and Kostas Axelos, who were his friends. He shares his thoughts on cinema, saying it primarily shows how people live, and express his optimism, especially for France, where women are the driving force behind most films.

The guest talks about the important role of music in films, its connection with characters, and his collaborations with composers such as Vangelis Papathanassiou and Mikis Theodorakis, explaining that his relationship with Greece and the Greek people is strong.

The visionary and pioneering filmmaker expresses his ongoing concerns about the state of the world today, particularly following Trump’s election. Reflecting on his own future as he turns 92, he remains both combative and optimistic.

A unique and revealing program, infused with Costa-Gavras’ distinctive humor.
