Chief Engineer Manthos Potiris speaks again today on the program “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
Master Manthos had the sensitivity and the rare gift of feeling and listening to the ship’s hull—as well as to its engines.
As he says characteristically:
“When the sea would swell and rage, the waves striking relentlessly and with great force against the bow and the ship’s sides, I would hear that bang like a great ‘Ah.’ The vessel was taking a hard blow on her sides, and I would go down to the engine room to adjust the engine revolutions—up or down—so the waves and the ship could fall into sync, ensuring a smoother passage and sparing the hull from pain.”
