Nikos Violos from Chios speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
“For us Chians, the sea was both an outlet and a solution for our professional path. Most people from my village, Vrontados—even though I grew up in Piraeus—turned to ships and shipping, and we have never regretted it. I first went to sea in 1979 on the M/V Mairoula, owned by Fafalios. It was a bulk carrier, which I took from Antwerp to Duluth, in the Great Lakes.
I was fortunate throughout my long career at sea, and I thank God for that. Once in Japan—I was Chief Engineer at the time—we had a fire that started in the laundry, probably from a washing machine. The Third Engineer and I were trapped, but the Japanese rescued us and took care of us in one of their hospitals,” Captain Nikos recounts, among other things.
