Three young veterinary specialists—Nina Zisopoulou, Oriana Manoli, and Vasilis Papatheodorou—whose expertise focuses on equine medicine (horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules) in Greece and abroad, spoke on Voice of Greece‘s radio program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis. They discussed the personal journeys that led them to equine veterinary medicine, where equines are most commonly found in Greece, the certification of specialized equine veterinarians, and the differences in the organization and quality of veterinary care available to equines in Greece compared with other European countries.
Oriana Manoli received her training in equine dentistry in Australia, where she completed the Diploma of Equine Dentistry offered by the Australian Equine Dental Practice (AEDP), an internationally recognized training program. She has also earned international certification in infrared thermography. Vasilis Papatheodorou has extensive experience in equine orthopedics and surgery, having performed numerous complex surgical procedures, and has specialized in shockwave therapy.
Nina Zisopoulou, an equine surgeon, completed her PhD in the Department of Equine Surgery and Orthopedics in the Czech Republic, focusing on ophthalmic surgery and the study of intraocular pressure in horses under general anesthesia. She subsequently worked as an assistant in equine surgery at the University of Brno, before continuing at the Grosbois Equine Hospital in France. She currently treats emergency cases at a specialized equine hospital in the United Kingdom. In addition, she is pursuing the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (CertAVP) in equine orthopedic surgery, a recognized postgraduate qualification in the UK.
