Giorgos Argyropoulos from Belfast on “Our Global Voice” | 17 June 2026

Giorgos Argyropoulos, Honorary Consul of Greece in Northern Ireland, spoke to Voice of Greece Radio and “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis about the Greek presence in the region, the local Greek community, and the ways in which Northern Ireland’s unique political and economic landscape has shaped the everyday lives and professional activities of its residents.

Having moved to Northern Ireland in 2009 to pursue his studies, Argyropoulos also discussed the growing cost-of-living and housing challenges facing the region. He noted that a two-bedroom apartment outside central Belfast typically rents for €1,200–1,300 per month, while the average monthly salary is approximately €2,200 (equivalent).

He also commented on the unrest that erupted in Belfast the previous week following a violent attack on an Irish citizen by a Sudanese migrant, and on the broader social climate in Northern Ireland. In this context, he recalled the deep historical divisions between unionists and Irish nationalist Catholics that have profoundly shaped the region’s modern history.
