Greek-American businessman Giannis Stavropoulos shared his experience of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the day of the terrorist attacks on New York’s Twin Towers, speaking on the Voice of Greece radio program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis.
Mr. Stavropoulos, who was at work that sunny morning at the St. Regis Hotel on Fifth Avenue, 4.5 kilometers away from the Towers, described witnessing the events unfold from the hotel’s 20th floor. He also recalled the permits required to get closer to the area later that afternoon, when he and others drove in a car filled with water and sandwiches for the police officers and firefighters. He spoke about the crowds forced to walk miles across the bridges out of Manhattan to reach their homes in other boroughs, as public transport had been shut down — and many more personal memories of that day.
