Vasilis Notaras from Mesochoria, Karpathos, speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
“For me, the sea is a way of life. I loved it, and I loved life aboard ships. If I could, I would still sign on and sail today,” says Vasilis, whose brothers were also seafarers. He graduated from the Pythagoras School of Marine Engineering in Piraeus and first went to sea in September 1979, embarking in Rijeka, then part of Yugoslavia.
“The first ship I sailed on was the M/V Athanasia. It was a 15,000-ton general cargo vessel. From Rijeka we went through the Suez Canal, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean, bound for China. Back then, our career options were Australia, America, or the sea—and I chose the sea,” he recalls.
