In the final broadcast of 2024, the distinguished countertenor Nikolas Spanos, a permanent resident of Vienna, was our guest. He spoke about his passion for lyrical singing and how his journey into the world of music began. He shared stories about his teachers, the performances that marked pivotal points in his career, and his experiences in opera and lyrical singing, as well as life in Vienna.
As a soloist, Spanos has collaborated with renowned ensembles and orchestras, including the Venice Baroque Orchestra, Les Talens Lyriques, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Salzburger Konzertgesellschaft, Orchester 1756 Salzburg, the Greek National Opera, the Athens and Thessaloniki Concert Halls, the National Theatre of Greece, the Athens and Thessaloniki State Orchestras, the Orchestra of Colours, the Camerata Athens (Armonia Atenea – Friends of Music Orchestra), the Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra, the ERT Music Ensembles, and numerous smaller early music ensembles across Europe and the U.S.
He is a regular collaborator with Baroque ensembles such as Ex Silentio, Latinitas Nostra, as well as Pandolfis Consort Wien, Continuum Ensemble, and Ensemble 1756 Salzburg. Nikolas Spanos has received accolades from the “Hellenic Association of Theatre and Music Critics,” being honored as the “Best Young Singer of the Year” for his portrayal of Arsamenes (Xerxes/Handel, Greek National Opera). Additionally, he was awarded First Prize at the National Opera Singing Competition hosted by “TECHNI.”
