We travelled to Karpathos, guided by Voice of Greece—ERT’s international radio service. In this episode of “Wander Words” Prokopis Agelopoulos is joined by Mr. Minas Alexiadis, Emeritus Professor of Folklore at the University of Athens and President of the Hellenic Folklore Society, who hails from Menetes, Karpathos.
Also featured are Father Epifanios, priest in the village of Volada, and Mrs. Morfi Diakogeorgiou, a schoolteacher from Olympos. Through their voices, we discover one of the most distinctive places in the Aegean—an island that has preserved its traditions more faithfully than almost any other, drawing the interest of folklorists from around the world.
The episode is interwoven with traditional tunes and songs from Karpathos and the wider Dodecanese.
