Anna Prokova selects excerpts from works by foreign authors that engage with Greece—so long as they might serve as the opposite of a travel guide.
From the sun-drenched, rugged landscapes of the Mani as captured by Patrick Leigh Fermor, we move to the shadowy, enigmatic settings of Patricia Highsmith’s wintery Athens in the early 1960s, and then to the labyrinthine depths of the Palace of Knossos.
From there, we return to the streets of Exarchia, against the backdrop of crisis-era Greece, before ending the journey in noir-tinged Astypalaia, seen through the lens of the uncompromising traveler and writer, Caryl Férey.
