Wander Words: Three nature excursions to the Rhodope Mountains and the Nestos River | 05 Aug. 2025

The latest “adventure” of the show “Wander Words”, broadcast on Tuesday, 5 August on Voice of Greece, set off from the city of Kavala.
Prokopis Agelopoulos brought in the experts to guide us through three special destinations in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace:

Ilias Michailidis, river guide, takes us through the Nestos Straits and the surrounding area, and even leads us on a kayaking route from Stavroupoli to the river’s delta.

Giorgos Papathanasiou, physicist and member of the Xanthi Mountaineering Club, guides us along the breathtaking trails that lead to the Livaditis Waterfall in northern Xanthi—considered for years the largest in the Balkans.

Finally, Alexandros Sotiriou, forest ecologist and deputy director of the Nestos-Vistonida and Rhodope National Parks Management Unit, introduces us to Greece’s only Elatia Forest, with its majestic Norway spruces and the nearby Forest Village. He also speaks about the annual Sarakatsani gathering, held at the end of July near the stone houses of the forest wardens’ settlement.
