On today’s program, we traveled, danced and turned up the volume with one of the most vibrant and sensual rhythms in the history of world music: the legendary mambo!
Beginning with its Afro-Cuban roots in 1930s Havana and the rise of Dámaso Pérez Prado, we moved on to New York’s golden age and the historic Palladium Ballroom, with the orchestras of Tito Puente, Machito and Tito Rodríguez.
We also followed the rhythm’s remarkable journey through Greece: from the great compositions of Giorgos Mouzakis and Takis Morakis in light orchestral music to Manolis Chiotis’ explosive laiko mambo with the four-string bouzouki, the performances of Sperantza Vrana and Mary Linda, and unforgettable moments from Greek cinema.
A rhythmic journey proving that mambo remains a universal language of joy and freedom for Greeks everywhere!
