Eleni Lianidou, the Ambassador of Greece to Peru, spoke on Voice of Greece and the show “Our Global Voice” with Petros Diplas and Dimitris Kontogiannis about the Clergy-Laity Assembly of Latin America held recently in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the executive committee meeting of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) in Cartagena, Colombia. She attended the latter event in light of Greece’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the UNWTO.
Ms. Lianidou stated that all Greek communities across Latin America were represented at the Clergy-Laity Assembly, which was also attended by the Secretary-General for Greeks Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maira Myrogianni; Greek ambassadors to Latin American countries; and a parliamentary delegation from the Hellenic Parliament. The main message conveyed by the Assembly was one of unity among Greeks, she emphasized, adding that everyone set a date for the next Assembly, which will take place in two years in Brasília, Brazil.
The Ambassador of Greece to Peru, who also serves as the Ambassador to Colombia and Ecuador, discussed her meetings in Cartagena, Colombia, with former Minister of Tourism and current ND MP Haris Theocharis. These meetings aimed to promote his candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization. She highlighted that this marks the first time Greece has submitted a candidacy for this position, with the support of EU countries. She expressed her belief that Mr. Theocharis has strong chances of success. The final deadline for submissions is the end of January 2025, with the election scheduled for May of the same year.
