Faraway Words – On the Inauguration of the Greek Centre in Dahab | 12 May 2025

In this episode, Mr. Antonis Kazamias, Vice President of the Greek Centre of Cairo—the oldest Greek association in Egypt—joined us via telephone from Cairo. Established in 1893 in the Egyptian capital, this historic institution was first presided over by Alexandros Rostovitz Bey, succeeded by Nestor Tsanaklis. Notably, these same individuals served as the first and second presidents, respectively, of the Greek Community of Cairo. Often referred to as “the home of the Greek diaspora,” the Greek Centre has long been the venue for major official events. Over the decades, it has hosted prominent figures such as Queen Frederica, King George II, Archbishop Makarios, Konstantinos Karamanlis, Egyptian actor Omar Sharif, among many others. As Mr. Kazamias highlighted, the Centre continues to serve as a venue for high-level business meetings to this day.

The immediate context for this conversation was the opening of the Centre’s new branch in Dahab, on the Sinai Peninsula—a renowned Egyptian resort town. The inauguration is expected to welcome 500 distinguished guests.

Mr. Kazamias also shared the shared vision of the Centre’s board: to establish similar branches in other cities across Egypt. The ultimate aim is to attract Greek entrepreneurs interested in investing in Egypt, thereby contributing to the vitality and growth of the Greek community in the country.
