Film director Kostas Machairas, former Head of ERT’s Department for the Greek Abroad, speaks on the program “Take Your Time” with Prokopis Agelopoulos, following his trip to Sydney as a guest of the Greek Film Festival organized by the Greek Community of New South Wales.
On the occasion of his film The Enigma of Keros, which was screened at the festival, and his meetings with local community leaders and Greek creators, Machairas describes how Greeks of the diaspora – especially the younger generations – mainly speak English in their daily lives, while at the same time maintaining a strong desire to stay connected with Greece. For this reason, he strongly emphasizes the importance of English subtitling for the content available to viewers abroad, as well as the need for effective communication about the international version of the Ertflix platform.
Beyond the (by no means narrow) framework of the festival – which takes place in several Australian cities with significant Greek populations – Machairas also speaks of the warm hospitality he received throughout his stay, including a guided visit to the SBS radio studios by journalist Themis Kallos.
Finally, the guest in the Voice of Greece studio takes us briefly from Australia to Argentina, announcing his recent distinction in Resistencia, where he was honored by the Greek cultural association Nostos during its conference, for his contribution to the Greek Diaspora – a recognition that also reflects the broader work carried out by ERT’s Department for Greeks Abroad in recent years.
