As part of the tribute series to notable figures of the Greek Diaspora, Professor Anastasios Tamis, researcher and Emeritus Professor of Diaspora History in Melbourne, shared the remarkable story of Theodoros Skalkos—an immigrant from Laconia who played a defining role in shaping Greek-language journalism in Australia.
Speaking on Voice of Greece and the program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis, Professor Tamis highlighted Skalkos’ groundbreaking contributions, including his initiative in the late 1970s to create and distribute the first professional directory of Greek-owned businesses in Australia. The directory reached over 300,000 Greek households, marking a major milestone in the community’s organization and visibility.
Professor Tamis will continue his tribute to Theodoros Skalkos next Friday.
