The veteran radio operator from the island of Syros, Vangelis Makropoulos, speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
He recalls the first ship he ever sailed: “It was December 1956. I sailed as a deck boy for 11 months aboard the M/V SANT JOHN, a cargo ship where I learned many of the secrets of seamanship and life at sea. Later, I completed another seven-month voyage, followed by studies at the Radio Operators’ School, where I earned my diploma and continued my career at sea as a radio operator.”
Vangelis Makropoulos also read short stories and sea tales written by Chief Engineer Michalis Triantafyllou and Captain Giorgos Abouselam.
