Greek-Canadian Gerry (Gerasimos) Sklavounos, former Deputy Minister of Health and Environment in Quebec, joined Voice of Greece and the program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis to discuss the outcome of Canada’s federal elections and its potential impact on U.S.-Canada relations under President Donald Trump.
Mr. Sklavounos analyzed the challenges that may lie ahead for the election winner and Liberal Party leader Mark Carney, particularly in light of possible independent oil agreements between U.S. states and Western Canadian provinces like Alberta. He emphasized that President Trump’s involvement in the Canadian campaign may have inadvertently benefited Carney, who won by a narrow 2% margin over the Conservatives. According to Sklavounos, many Canadians view Carney—former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England—as having the experience and credibility needed to negotiate effectively with Trump.
