Antonis Klapsis on the 1827 Treaty of London | 07 July 2026

Antonis Klapsis, Associate Professor of Modern History and International Politics at the University of the Peloponnese, discusses the events that led to the Treaty of London in 1827 and its significance on the road to the establishment of the modern Greek state in 1830. He spoke on Voice of Greece Radio’s program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis.

Signed on 6 July 1827 by the three Great Powers—Britain, France, and Russia—the Treaty of London came at a time when the Greek War of Independence was nearing collapse. The treaty called for the establishment of a Greek state under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Sultan. Without it, the Battle of Navarino would not have taken place, and the subsequent developments that led to the London Protocol and the founding of the modern Greek state would not have followed.
