The veteran Chian captain and maritime studies associate, Argyris Chatzelenis, talks about his first voyage in 1978 aboard the M/V GOOD TRAVELLER, sailing from Piraeus to Romania and then to Vietnam.
He shares stories about his favorite ship, the “grand lady” of the Aegean, PENELOPE. He sailed with her for seven years and had a special bond with this iconic vessel of Greek coastal shipping.
“I met so many people, both unknown and well-known, throughout my years traveling on PENELOPE. Thousands of passengers sailed on this historic ship—young and old, workers, lovers, students, vacationers, politicians, military officers. All of them and many more traveled with my ship to the Cyclades, and yes, there are countless stories to tell. But now, after 53 years of life, she has gone to the Aliaga Ship Breaking Yard in Turkey. That is the fate of aging ships,” says Captain Argyris.
He also shared a few words about the Panchian Cultural Association of Merchant Marine Officers (PESEN).
