Singer/actress Idra Kayne on “Voice of Greece” | 02 Aug. 2024

The show “Take Your Time,” hosted by Prokopis Angelopoulos, welcomed the talented singer and actress Idra Kayne to the studio. This exceptional artist was born in Athens and raised in Kypseli by a Ugandan father and a Greek mother. She shared a touching story about how her father came to Greece in 1967 to study at the Evelpidon School and met her mother, who hailed from Kypseli.

Idra openly discussed her passion for social issues, particularly racism and stereotypes. Currently, she is undergoing a “rebranding” phase with Greek songs. Additionally, she is gearing up to grace the stage at the National Theater in the upcoming production “In Her Body.” Simultaneously, she is filming for the new comedy series “Good Health.”

Known for her exceptional voice and captivating stage presence, Idra is celebrated as a standout figure in the soul, pop, and R’n’B scene in our country. Despite initially studying social work after passing the national exams, she found her true calling in the arts. She dedicated 15 years to studying dance (including classical ballet and jazz), voice training, songwriting, composition, orchestration, and beatbox in Rotterdam as part of the European Union’s Roots & Routes program.

Professionally immersed in music since 2000, Idra began performing live at major music venues in Athens and Thessaloniki that same year. From 2008 to the present day, she has collaborated with numerous artists on recordings and live performances. In 2011, she released her debut album “Don’t Walk Away” (MINOS EMI), with the title track earning the honor of being selected as the song of the quarter by Jumping Fish. Her second single, “Love Love Love,” debuted in June 2012, accompanied by a music video shot in Athens and L.A.

In the summer of 2013, she held her first major concert at the Megaron Garden. From November 2016 to March 2017, she graced the Piraeus Coast stage alongside George Dalaras, Yiannis Kotsiras, Lavrentis Machairitsas, and Yiannis Zouganelis, contributing to the recording of Lavrentis Machairitsas’ song “Ypnovatis.” In January 2017, she was chosen as the opening act for Incognito at Gazarte, and in June of the same year, she returned to the Megaron Garden with the project “If I were a boy.”

In November 2017, her highly anticipated second album, “MicDrop” (MINOS EMI), was released. Since 2011, Idra has also been actively involved in theater and has made appearances in television series and films. As of 2022, she has expanded her career to include radio production, working on Pride 98.6 and Nostos 100.6.
