Author Lefteris Papakostas on “Take Your Time” | 26 Feb. 2026

The well-known historian and author Lefteris Papakostas joined the program “Take Your Time”, hosted by Prokopis Agelopoulos, on the occasion of his recent book, Ioannis Kapodistrias: The Other Face of the Governor.”

In this work, Papakostas offers a nuanced portrait of Ioannis Kapodistrias, marking his second book dedicated to the first Governor of Greece. A significant part of the research is based on rare archival material and personal correspondence. These letters, sent by Kapodistrias to prominent figures throughout his life, trace his journey from his early emergence on the political stage of his homeland, Corfu, to the dawn of 27 September 1831, when he was assassinated in Nafplio.

Through this material, a markedly different image of Kapodistrias emerges—one that contrasts with the version often presented by official historiography. Personal confessions reveal both his deep anxiety and his steadfast belief that, despite immense challenges, he would succeed in rebuilding a suffering nation, eradicating lawlessness, and establishing a well-governed society with European characteristics.
