Stefanos Pallantzas, civil engineer and President of the Hellenic Passive House Institute, discusses the urgent need to upgrade and shield buildings so that heating and cooling costs do not become “money poured into a bottomless barrel.” He explains which interventions are necessary in older buildings and which construction periods are most affected. He also outlines the funding programmes currently available for energy-efficiency upgrades. Using concrete numerical and statistical data, he illustrates how significant the savings in heating and cooling can be — reaching, in some cases, up to 100%, particularly in systems that integrate rooftop solar-panel technology for full energy supply.
